Allison has introduced a targeted five-year extended transmission warranty for food waste collection vehicles in response to new mandatory weekly food waste collections.

AMPTHILL, UK, January 31st 2025 – Allison Transmission has introduced a competitive package, incorporating five-year extended coverage, on its 2500 xFE™ and 3000 xFE™ fully automatic transmission models destined for food waste collection vehicles in the UK.

The move responds to the UK government’s incoming ‘Simpler Recycling’ legislation for England, which introduces significant changes to waste collection practices. These include the mandating of weekly separate food waste collections, by March 31st 2025 for businesses and March 31st 2026 for households, which is estimated to result in the specification and procurement of an estimated 2,000[1] new vehicles across local authorities and waste management companies in England.

Allison’s fully automatic transmissions are widely specified in the British refuse collection vehicle (RCV) market, including vehicles specially designed for food waste. They are a perfect partner to smaller, lighter vehicles collecting lower volumes of waste more frequently and manoeuvring on often narrow, congested streets. They are built to handle the tough, stop-and-go nature of food waste collection and are quieter in operation. With drivers able to have both hands on the steering wheel, Allison transmissions help improve driver concentration and reduce fatigue.

Offering Allison Extended Coverage on the 2500 xFE and 3000 xFE transmissions most commonly specified in the 12 to 16 tonne gross vehicle weight (GVW) categories, is designed to allow customers to continue to enjoy the benefits of Allison fully automatic transmissions. The 2500 xFE and 3000 xFE feature Allison’s xFE (for extra Fuel Economy) technology, which returned a 4.8 percent fuel saving over the standard transmission in a study of two Dennis Eagle Elite 26-tonne trucks operated by Biffa on commercial waste collection duties[2].

“The Simpler Recycling legislation has introduced additional capital investment and operational costs for English waste collection and recycling fleets. As a result, they are balancing cost efficiency and environmental responsibility when specifying their vehicles,” said Nathan Wilson, UK Market & Area Sales Manager, Allison Transmission. “By extending the warranty, we are improving our financial proposition while demonstrating our confidence in the superior durability, reliability and performance of Allison Automatics. Additionally, we are supporting the UK’s strategic carbon reduction plan with the xFE models.”

In addition to Allison’s Extended Coverage which includes 100 per cent parts and labour as well as vehicle recovery, the transmissions benefit from extended drain intervals by using approved fully synthetic fluids, TES668 and TES295.

Simpler Recycling

With the aim of moving towards a zero waste, circular economy, the UK government’s Simpler Recycling legislation is designed to enable consistent, more streamlined collections from all households, businesses and relevant non-domestic premises (such as schools and hospitals), addressing the current “muddled and confusing patchwork of approaches to bin collections.” The new default requirement for most households and workplaces will be four containers for: residual (non-recyclable) waste, food waste (mixed with garden waste if appropriate), paper and card, and all other dry recyclable materials (plastic, metal and glass).

Simpler Recycling is intended to make a significant step towards meeting the government’s ambition to recycle 65% of municipal waste by 2035 and deliver greenhouse gas emissions savings equivalent to £11.8 billion.

By March 31st 2025, businesses in England will need to arrange for the collection of the core recyclable waste streams (glass, metal, plastic, paper and card, and food waste). By March 31st 2026, local authorities will be required to collect the core recyclable waste streams from all households in England, including introducing weekly food waste collections for most homes.
