At Busworld Europe 2025, Allison Transmission will present a range of products and highlight the latest advances in fuel-saving and fuel-agnostic solutions.
SLIEDRECHT, the Netherlands, September 2025 – Allison Transmission, a leading designer and manufacturer of conventional, electric hybrid and fully electric vehicle propulsion solutions for medium- and heavy-duty commercial vehicles, will showcase a variety of products for the bus and coach sector at Busworld Europe (October 4 – 9, Brussels, Belgium, Hall 3, Stand 315). The presentation includes the new 9-speed fully automatic transmission and the Torqmatic® series of automatic transmissions for buses.
As a global leader in commercial vehicle propulsion solutions, Allison Transmission has a long history of innovation and reliability, making it a trusted partner for bus manufacturers and operators worldwide.
Allison continues to innovate and develop partnerships in the bus and coach market. This year alone, Allison has introduced its fully automatic transmission technology to South America’s school transportation market, equipping Brazil’s first-ever school buses with Allison’s T2100 xFE™ transmissions to enhance fuel efficiency and reliability. In the U.S., Allison partnered with the Maryland Transit Administration to deploy New Flyer buses featuring the eGen Flex® hybrid propulsion system in Baltimore. These 40-foot electric-hybrid buses utilise geofencing to operate up to half of their routes in engine-off mode, significantly reducing emissions and noise. In Germany, MAN double-decker sightseeing buses have been retrofitted from diesel to electric, with optimised Allison fully automative transmissions, contributing to cleaner urban mobility.
Allison continuously optimises its powertrain solutions to meet the emission reduction and energy efficiency requirements of commercial vehicles. All Allison fully automatic transmissions are compatible with alternative fuel engines such as compressed natural gas (CNG) or biogas, as well as electric motors and hydrogen technology. This enables fleets to reduce emissions from their internal combustion engine vehicles.
9-Speed fully automatic transmission and Torqmatic series
The Torqmatic® series of automatic transmissions is designed to deliver exceptional performance and efficiency in a wide range of bus applications. Its advanced technology ensures smooth and reliable operation, reducing driver fatigue and enhancing passenger comfort.
The new 9-speed fully automatic transmission provides superior fuel efficiency, enhanced performance, and low maintenance costs, making it ideal for urban transit applications. Since the start of production in 2023, the Allison 9-Speed fully automatic transmission has been equipped in Otokar’s Navigo Giga range. The transmission builds on the proven durability of the Allison 2000 Series™ 6-speed transmission, which has accumulated more than 100 billion miles globally. It’s designed to utilize the same vehicle manufacturer interfaces as its 6-speed predecessor, providing ease of integration into vehicles currently equipped with the Allison 2000 SeriesTM.
“The new Allison 9-Speed transmission offers superior performance and engine torque for applications up to 1,200 newton-meters,” said Trond Johanson, Director European Sales at Allison Transmission. “With the transition from six gears to nine gears, there is an improvement of over 50% in gear ratio due to a wider gear ratio coverage and smaller gear steps compared to an eight- or six-speed transmission. This results in higher performance and lower fuel consumption.”

Diesel engine out, electric powertrain in: 18 double-decker sightseeing buses from Willms Touristik have recently been converted from diesel to electric. The modernised buses have been operating in Cologne and other German cities since the spring of 2025. All vehicles are powered by a powerful 145 kW electric motor in combination with a fully automatic Allison T280R transmission.

As part of the ‘Retrofit electric mobility in urban public transport’ funding programme’, 18 MAN double-deckers manufactured between 1988 and 2019 were electrified and the diesel engine was replaced with a modern electric drive. The conversion was carried out by Banke ApS, a Danish specialist company, in close cooperation with the Allison authorised distributor DGS Diesel- und Getriebeservice GmbH in Mainz, Germany.
