Largest UK installation of Vitodens 200-W condensing boilers ensures silence (and warmth) in court, while reducing emissions and energy consumption
A new heating system incorporating 16 Viessmann Vitodens 200-W 150 kW condensing boilers has been installed at Manchester Crown Court, by Viessmann partner Aston Cord Energy Services Ltd, to replace an outdated and poorly functioning set up. The new system will provide better heating throughout the building, improve energy efficiency, increase system control and reduce consumption and emissions.
The installation is the largest in the UK of the Vitodens 200-W boiler, providing 2.4 MW of power. It is designed to provide maximum reliability and flexibility to meet varying demands at different times and in different parts of the Minshull Street Grade II listed Victorian landmark, which is managed by G4S. The new boilers are operated in rotation, with four banks of four cascaded boilers managed by a Viessmann Vitotronic 300 control unit that is integrated into the existing building management system. This ensures better modulation, avoids any downtime and provides the right amount of heat to all parts of the building.
The Vitodens 200-W boilers were selected by lead contractor Honeywell because of their efficiency and small size which made them easier to fit in a basement plantroom with difficult and restricted access. The new boilers replace eight old-style non-condensing boilers which were twenty years old and inefficient by today’s standards. Only four of the old boilers were still functioning. Twenty-four fixed-speed pumps were also replaced with variable-speed ones, and a further six pumps were added, to improve control of the system while reducing electricity consumption.
An important aspect of the installation of the new system, carried out by Aston Cord Energy Services Ltd, was that the heating should be kept operational, with minimal noise during court operating hours and no interruptions to court proceedings.
James Erskine, project manager at Aston Cord Energy Services, said, “This was a complex installation in an old building with poor energy-efficiency and poorly controlled heating. The installation was challenging and the team had to work with the court house to ensure they did not disrupt any court sessions, maintain tight security throughout and ensure heating provision throughout the project. It was further complicated by the location of the plantroom, with very tight access down two flights of stairs and past an air-handling system that was installed after the old heating system. The compact size of the Vitodens 200-W boilers made it possible to get them to where they needed to be in the heart of the building with minimum noise and disruption.”
